Virginia Woolf said that in 1910 the world changed.  This was the beginning of what is known in the history of literature and the arts as high modernism.  With the jazz revolution also beginning around 1910 and finding an immediate place in Paris about ten years later spreading throughout Europe as it already was in the United States in the Jazz Age 1920s this does define the coming century culturally and the year it was born fairly well.
